Trigger Point Injections

If you suffer from chronic back pain, stiffness, and tight muscles, you should consider trigger point injections. Visiting our office that offers trigger point injections in Scottsdale is a great way to treat the underlying condition causing your back pain, neck and shoulder pain rather than just your symptoms.

What Are Trigger Points & How Do They Cause Back Pain?

Trigger points are an accumulation of scar tissue and lactic acid deep in the muscles after an injury or overuse. When a trigger point develops, it can cause strain, pain, stiffness, and loss of range of motion. Without treatment, trigger point pain can progress into myofascial pain syndrome. Over time, trigger point pain can affect every element of your life, making it hard to eat, sleep, exercise, work, and take part in your day-to-day activities and hobbies. New research suggests that trigger point pain and myofascial pain syndrome can contribute to fibromyalgia.

What Are Trigger Point Injections?

A trigger point injection is a medically approved and tested method for the treatment of pain, tightness, and stiffness associated with trigger point pain. Trigger point injections use a local anesthetic that may be combined with a corticosteroid and/or Botox to further enhance its effects.

What Happens During a Trigger Point Injection?

Knowing what to expect during a trigger point injection will help you prepare. Our Nurse Practitioner will have you lie down on an exam table and either lift your shirt up or wear a medical gown. He will cleanse your skin and mark the area of injection with a pen. Next, he will pinch your skin to stabilize the tissue, and then will insert a thin needle into the trigger point. He will continue to insert and retract the needle to stimulate the muscle. You may feel your muscles spasm or twitch, and our Nurse Practitioner will continue the process until the muscle is fully relaxed. He will then inject the area with an anesthetic.
